Seattle Seahawks trade cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers stepped up their second Friday afternoon, acquiring cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon from the Seattle Seahawks. In return, the Steelers traded a round five pick in 2023.

Withersppon had just signed a one-year, $ 4 million off-season deal with the Seahawks this spring that was fully guaranteed. A former 2017 third-round pick for the San Francisco 49ers from Colorado, Witherspoon spent his first four seasons with the team. Last season he played 11 games with four stars, combined for 20 tackles, four defended passes and one interception. In 47 career games (33 starts) he combined 117 tackles, 24 defended passes and four interceptions.

After Seattle’s deal with Sidney Jones, Witherspoon appeared to be heading for a backup role on the team. DJ Reed, Tre Flowers and Jones were at the top of the depth chart above him. The Seahawks saved $ 1.5 million in base salary on the trade.

Witherspoon, 26, joins Joe Haden, Cam Sutton, James Pierre and Justin Layne in the Steelers’ cornerbacks room. To make room in the 53-man squad, the team fired defensive lineman Henry Mondeaux.

The Steelers ended their preseason with a 34-9 home defeat last Sunday to the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Mike Tomlin was not satisfied with the performance of his team.

“Just disappointed with our performance tonight,” said Tomlin after the game. “I’m excited about the opportunity for the boys, especially since Carolina played against a lot of their regulars. I thought it would be a great platform for them to show their skills in college and in short we didn’t. We didn’t care. ” of the ball. We didn’t win any possession downs on the offensive.

“I thought the defense started strong, but when the fatigue set in because we couldn’t hold the ball, there were mental failures, there were physical failures when the fatigue set in. We turned the ball over in special teams.

“All in all, it was a junior college performance. We accept that. We understand what that means. But we also understand where we are together on this journey. I appreciate your efforts not just tonight but throughout this process. Now we’re starting decision making and I’m sure we will start when we get back.

“We are disappointed after the performance in the stadium. But there will be disappointments in the ball and in life.”
