The architects say the design will draw on the natural surroundings of the Pacific Northwest while incorporating elements of Seattle’s cultural heritage such as the city’s Pike Place Market. The airport also plans to expand to earn LEED Silver certification and will be the first to implement elements from the Seattle Port Sustainable Projects Framework.
The expansion includes the addition of four additional floors to the reception area, with each floor covering 27,000 feet2. The architects note that efforts are being made to increase the coverage of natural daylight. It will also include new facilities such as toilets, escalator systems and seating.
Development follows shortly after the airport’s new International Arrivals Facility (IAF) is built, which is slated to open this summer and which has 450,000 feet of construction2 Baggage claim and customs hall connected to the South Satellite area of the airport.
