Slog AM: The Police Had a Good Election Night, Very Little Good News for Progressives in Seattle Races, Republicans Look Likely to Lose One More King County Council Seat – Slog

“A supporter said ‘IT’S OVER’ – presumably for González.” SECB

So last night was bad. Very bad. At the national level, Virginia basically turns red. The state’s governor will be Glenn Youngkin, a Trumpy Republican, and the GOP is well on its way to retaking the home of the state. The main explanation for the Dems dismal performance is that voters, white voters, have had enough of this long pandemic and black lives matter. But I think it also has a lot to do with Biden’s economic program being ineffective because of members in his own party. Virginia says the GOP will take over the Senate and House of Representatives in 2022. And that will be the beginning of the end of American democracy.

In Seattle, Bruce Harrell, Ann Davison and Sara Nelson jumped far ahead of their progressive opponents (M. Lorena González, Nicole Thomas-Kennedy and Nikkita Oliver, respectively). Seattle Is Dying finally had its day in city politics. As the Stranger Election Control Board put it, “Well, after the first round of voting, Seattle appears to have selected a Trump Republican to run its legal department, a corporate training manual for a mayor, a beer lobbyist for a councilor, and Teresa Moscheeda.”

the The New York Times sees the Seattle election results as a connection with Minneapolis’ rejection of “an election measure that would have replaced the city police department with a public safety department” and the successful “anti-crime embassy” of the elected mayor of New York, Eric Adams. All of this means the police had a very good night.

Defund my ass, motherfucker.
Seattle’s most famous climate denierYou, professor and weather blogger Cliff Mass, had a good night too. The SECB learned that he was devoting his time and energy to Davison’s campaign. He doesn’t know how to use a face mask either – it was under his nose.

Speaking of crackers who feel it. There’s Joel Connelly, a grumpy commentator who can be found on Cloud 9 right now.

Huh, so I think Joel resorts to being “potty-wise” at times. pic.twitter.com/pMMCPVFO3o

What does Goldy have to say about this whole election disaster?

I’ll say this now, before the results are in, to avoid any sour grape occurrence, but Seattle really should reschedule its local elections to even years when the turnout is significantly higher.

(I know empowering legislation is needed. But it can be done.)

Overall, the turnout was very low. My Northwest reports that Snohomish County counted only 20% of its registered voters. King County 22% and Pierce County 17%.

There is, but one positive side for King County: Dems are on their way to claiming one of the three remaining GOP seats on King County Council.
Redmond Reporter’s Conor Wilson reports:

Contender Sarah Perry has led 20-year-old incumbent Kathy Lambert in the District 3 race for King County Council since November 2nd.

Perry has so far received 55% of the vote and is 11 points ahead of Lambert, with 21% of the ballots counted among the registered voters. The district expects a voter turnout of 46%

In case you forgot, Lambert recently attempted to blow up some shit with a seriously racist mailer. The other King County’s Republicans are likely to return.

Boston elected his first black and female person, Michelle Wu, as mayor. According to the NPR, “Wu, whose parents immigrated to the US from Taiwan, brought a 199-year-old streak of white male elected city guides.” Can you feel that One white man at a time for almost 200 years.

Cleveland, Ohio elected a young (34) black progressive, Justin Bibb, as 57th mayor.

Former Obama intern Justin Bibb wins the election as the next mayor of Cleveland. The 34-year-old becomes the second youngest mayor in the city’s history.https: //t.co/HDp4QCJQJU

And Dearborn, Michigan made Abdullah Hammoud its “First Arab-American Muslim Mayor”.

Abdullah Hammoud, who knew about Dearborn and its history, elected its first Arab-American mayor. This is an important moment in Michigan https://t.co/ZErDixfnpB

And yes, White women are trending on Twitter right now. Why? Because they played a big part in Virginia’s red turn and the impending destruction of all that is left of American democracy.

It looks like New Jersey Democratic Governor Phil Murphy will serve another term. He is now ahead of GOP challenger Jack Ciattarelli, and the votes yet to be tallied are “in democratic strongholds”. But this race shouldn’t even be close.

And what were QAnon Followers expecting to see Dallas on Tuesday? Nothing less than “the reappearance of John F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr.” The Daily Beast headline: “QAnon Crowd Super Bummed that JFK Jr. didn’t show up in Dallas.” In fact, life in America isn’t always dynamite.
