Three takeaways from the Seattle Sounders’ Leagues Cup Final heartbreak

Participation in a cup competition during the MLS season always requires a balancing act between striving for a trophy while observing the league’s schedule and placing in the Audi MLS Cup playoffs.

The challenge now for Seattle is to quickly turn the page on that defeat and focus back on the Western Conference race where they find themselves in a full battle for the No. 1 seed. They’ll be thrown straight into the deep end in a street fight against their current closest rival for the coveted top seed on Sunday (7pm ET | FS1, FOX Deportes) against Sporting Kansas City.

That leaves no time to deal with Wednesday’s defeat, especially as the postseason is getting closer.

“We have to. That’s life,” said Schmetzer. “Yes, the guys are gutted in this locker room, they’re tired, they’re emotionally drained. But it’s also a resilient group. So we’re going to regroup, we have to regroup. We understand where Sporting KC is in the table stands.” So we’re going to get this game, we’re going to try to get past it, and we still have some very important tasks to attend to to try to finish as best we can in order to get the best possible placement in the playoffs.

“Some of the emotions after a big loss like this are hard to describe and difficult to manage. But by default we have to get back on the horse and prepare for a series of games to end our regular season.”
