The Seattle Southside Regional Tourism Authority (RTA) premiered their latest Seattle Southside Scenes video about the historic former Nike missile site at Grandview Dog Park in SeaTac on Tuesday evening (June 15, 2021).
The Scenes campaign presents the region’s art, history and culture in a documentary series that uncover the fascinating stories of iconic landmarks, hidden gems and the people behind them.
The new video – produced and presented by local historian / filmmaker Steve Edmiston – highlights the story of one of the Nike missile sites developed in the Puget Sound region in response to potential threats during the Cold War. With the ability to specifically fire missiles at enemy bombers that escaped interceptor squadrons, the site was once considered the final defense against nuclear disaster. Today the grounds have been transformed into a quaint place where you can take your dog with you to burn off some energy.
The video was revealed with a surprise pop-up event on the Quarterdeck in Des Moines with Edmiston – check out an edited version of what The B-Town Blog streamed live on Facebook:
The last event on the quarterdeck before regular operations were disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic was a presentation on Edmiston’s Nike Missile Site S43, so it was fitting that he featured at that event.
“We’re excited to share another fascinating story about the unique history of the Seattle Southside area,” said Ashley Comar, vice president of marketing and communications for the Seattle Southside RTA, at the event. “Sharing the stories of these places shows what makes our area so special.”
