RENTON, Washington (AP) – A month after surgery on the middle finger of his throwing hand, Russell Wilson was back on the Seattle Seahawks practice field on Monday, throwing passes.
One setback aside, Wilson should be back on the center stage for the Seahawks on Sunday when they travel to Green Bay.
“This is a remarkable story of recovery,” said Seattle manager Pete Carroll on Monday after the team returned from their farewell week. “One guy made the intention to do this and see it through. I mean, he’s way ahead of schedule. We just came from the practice field and he threw the ball everywhere. “
Wilson was released the previous Monday to return to football activities, rounding off a recovery that seemed unlikely when he underwent surgery on October 8 in Los Angeles.
Wilson’s surgeon, Dr. Steve Shin, released a statement by the team saying he cleared Wilson for a “full return to the game without reservation”. Wilson also posted a video on social media on Monday titled “It’s Time”.
“I have also never seen a player who is so committed to his post-operative therapy and is so confident that he will return to the same, if not better, level of performance than before his injury,” said Shin. “I am absolutely amazed at his progress.”
Seattle started Season 2-3 with Wilson, who was injured in their Week 5 loss to the Los Angeles Rams when his hand hit the arm of Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald. Seattle went 1-2 in Wilson’s absence with Geno Smith as quarterback.
Carroll said the most bullish outlook on Wilson’s recovery is the chance to return this week, but there is no guarantee it will happen. Carroll also said the key is how Wilson – and his finger – recover from work every day in the office.
“He looked great out there today. So that’s a tremendous achievement, ”said Carroll. “That was the kind of hope that it could happen this week if he could do something special. We thought so and I know that he was ready to leave yesterday. “
It’s the first time in Wilson’s career that he has missed a game. Wilson had started 165 games in a row in the regular season and the playoffs and only missed a handful of games along the way.
It seems likely that a new series will begin against the Packers.
“The intent is for him to play when he’s okay,” said Carroll.
NOTES: Carroll addressed ongoing speculation linking the Seahawks to WR Odell Beckham Jr., who was waived Monday by the Cleveland Browns. Beckham can be claimed by any NFL team that wants him for the remainder of this season at a cost of $ 7.25 million. “We are aware of what is going on and we were involved to understand and competed to know what was happening. And we will let you know how it all happens. You have to wait. “… RB Chris Carson, who has been out with neck problems since week 5, is expected to return to training on Wednesday. Before leaving, Carroll had hoped that Carson would be able to train on Monday.
