What happens from August 20th to 26th?

If you want to take an outdoor stroll where you can explore interactive art installations and pop-up design experiences, then stop by Seattle Design Festival. The festival – a multidisciplinary event for all ages and abilities – takes place at Lake Union Park on August 21-22.

Since the Seattle Design Festival was founded in 2011, the goal has been to “unleash the design thinker in everyone, illuminate Seattle’s challenges and spark action,” said Annalee Shum, senior program manager, Design in Public Initiative created in collaboration with the Seattle Design Festival to encourage collaborative dialogue about design. The main goal is also to involve the community both during and in the development of the event, she added.

At the Seattle Design Festival, attendees can find art and activities created by over 75 local organizations and individuals. All work aims to highlight this year’s theme, “Emerge,” which provides practical opportunities to interact, collaborate, design and reflect on how Seattle has changed during the pandemic.

“Our topic is not about focusing on what we emerge from, but on what we achieve as a community – what we achieve while our community heals, when we move through significantly changed perspectives and think about new things Ways to use design, ”said Shum.

The festival’s content also traditionally focuses on issues of social justice and equity, she said.

Attendees can look forward to exhibits such as “Homebase” by the architectural firm Olson Kundig, “which is the result of a collaboration with Camp United We Stand and will really help develop some design solutions for people in portable homes,” said Shum. Attendees can also enjoy a block party lounge outfitted with furniture that will ultimately be used by youth designers, she added.

The Seattle Design Festival takes place August 21-22, 10 am-7pm in Lake Union Park (860 Terry Ave. N., Seattle). The event is free of charge. Further information can be found at: designinpublic.org
