SEATTLE – As the beer flows at the Mètier Brewing Company, there is a sense of purpose.
Literally translated from French, mètier means vocation.
“The more poetic translation is calling, destiny,” said CEO and co-founder Rodney Hines.
When the brewery started three and a half years ago, there were only 20 women-owned and 50 black-owned breweries in the country.
Today, Hines doesn’t know of any other black-owned breweries in Washington.
“I think we didn’t create spaces where everyone would feel welcome and see themselves,” said Hines.
Everything at Mètier is diverse and conscious, from the design of the labels and walls to procurement in the supply chain.
Anyone who drinks a beer is greeted with a mission statement.
“The mission really is to brew damn good beer and build a stronger community to make bigger dreams for everyone,” said Hines.
In 2022, those dreams will come true in a new way when the Seattle Mariners reopen the old Pyramid Alehouse across from T-Mobile Park as a restaurant, bar, and event space.
Mètier brews beer in the center, in a room called Steelheads Alley, a nod to the Negro League baseball team that played in Seattle in 1946.
“In this room we will honor your story,” said Hines.
Beers are named after Steelheads players and the artwork will celebrate them.
When the property was being redeveloped, the Mariners undertook to provide office space on the upper floor for non-profit organizations and women, as well as companies owned by minorities.
“I think they do it by paying attention to who to bring and who to pick up,” Hines said.
When the Mariners pick up Rodney Hines, he does the same for others.
With Reuben’s Brews, Mètier founded the Mosaic State Brewers Collective, which helped aspiring entrepreneurs from underrepresented communities get into the business.
“Part of our job is to take others with us and develop them further than we do,” said Hines.
