Ezell’s new initiative to accept grant applications from black companies

Ezell’s Famous Chicken announced Monday, August 30th, that they are partnering with on-demand grocery supplier DoorDash to offer “no-obligation business grants” to 20 black-owned Pacific Northwestern companies as part of their new Rudd’s Raising Up Black Businesses (RUBB) Initiative. The scholarships will help fund sustainability, operations, growth, and success for the scholarship holders.

Ezell’s will also offer eight additional scholarships (in addition to the 20 under the RUBB initiative) as part of their President’s Choice Awards program.

Applications were submitted on Monday, August 30th and can be submitted until Monday, September 20th. The grants are awarded based on a combination of the application process, direct referrals, and working with black companies.

From Ezells: “Rudd’s RUBB initiative will have a very positive impact on black-owned small businesses that will lead to positive change within the community,” Lewis Rudd [co-founder of Ezell’s] called. “As Co-Founders, we believe that supporting and promoting entrepreneurship will help bridge the wealth gap for African Americans and lead to other benefits such as better health care and education and less violence. The initial reaction and support has been great and we expect it will continue to grow. ‘

“This initiative was started by Lewis Rudd, co-founder and CEO of Ezell’s Famous Chicken, which has been in business for 37 years and operates 17 locations in Washington and Oregon. Rudd approached DoorDash with his idea and forged a partnership that resulted in the company joining the company as a charter partner and donating $ 40,000 to set up the fund. The Rudd family contributed $ 10,000 to the fund.

“In addition to DoorDash, Rudd’s RUBB is approaching a select group of companies to join the initiative as a partner in Prosperity. This project can help.”
