Nicole Thomas-Kennedy could soon destroy Seattle as we know it.

Thomas-Kennedy is a police and prison abolitionist who plans to dismantle the Seattle prosecutor’s office. She is a former public defender who says most offenses should not be prosecuted. And since she supports so-called anti-fascists, she is better known as an anti-fascist candidate.

Thomas-Kennedy won the Seattle City Attorney primary, ousting a three-term incumbent who rarely prosecutes crimes. She is now facing Ann Davison, a moderate Republican attorney and arbitrator.

Thomas-Kennedy is perhaps the most extreme fringe candidate in the entire country. But in Seattle, it seems to be a perfect fit. A cursory glance at Thomas-Kennedy’s Twitter feed gives a terrifying glimpse of what drives her activism.

A pinned tweet at the top of her Twitter feed reads: “Despite decades of reform, the criminal punishment system still targets the most marginalized.

It is time to dismantle this racist system and build structures of community-led accountability and real public safety. “

But wait, there’s more.

The abolitionist considers the destruction of property to be a “moral imperative” and cheers the anti-fascist thugs who burn property during riots. Thomas-Kennedy claims that Antifa and Black Lives Matter agitators did not commit violence during the infamous Summer of Love that created a deadly autonomous zone. She calls the police “Nazis” and “oppressors” who must be released and abolished. She claims the prosecutors are “targeting” marginalized communities. And of course she wants to end capitalism and calls the USA “Amerikkka”.

Nor is she the only abolitionist to win her Seattle primary.

SEATTLE SHOOTINGS: MAN KILLS ATTEMPTED BOLDER; 2 FURTHER WOUNDED IN INDEPENDENT INCIDENTS, SAY THE POLICE

Local activist, lawyer, and police abolitionist Nikkita Oliver beat her business-friendly Democrat in the city councilor’s primary. Oliver was a senior organizer throughout the Seattle Autonomous Zone. And although it’s not that extreme, the current President of the Council, Lorena Gonzalez, is in a close race for mayor’s office. She helped lead the Defund movement with promises to cut 50% of the budget while trying to find a legal way to fire white cops for being, well, white.

While Oliver and Gonalez would continue to push Seattle to the edge of town, Thomas Kennedy’s race is far more momentous.

The prosecution has the prosecution’s discretion and can run the office without much interference from the council. When an abolitionist takes over, there is no going back. Seattle will never recover. For those of us who live and work here like me, it’s hard to imagine Seattle getting worse.

The Seattle Police Department has lost 300 officers since last year. That’s about a third of its strength. Officials are leaving because of Seattle City Council’s continued Defund activism. As a result, the city had a 26-year high homicide rate in 2020. The city is well on its way to breaking that record this year.

And homelessness has never been worse: there are camps everywhere and the homeless are becoming increasingly violent. Many of them are repeat offenders who either rarely face criminal prosecution or never see meaningful prison sentences.

The most recent high profile incidents include a homeless mob attacking a young family and a tourist who is brutally beaten and robbed in broad daylight. Two arrests show that the suspects have a long criminal history.

The huge homeless camp occupies prime properties along the busiest street in town with scenic views of the Space Needle. On July 27, a mob from the camp attacked a couple and their two-week-old child with a machete, large wooden stick, stones and other weapons.

The couple went to the camp to retrieve items that had been stolen from a car tour the night before. In Seattle, police are rarely allowed to enter camps and, due to staff shortages and more urgent crimes, they are rarely used to recover stolen items during break-ins.

After finding and recovering their stolen items, the victims retreated to their car when the mob attacked them. The security camera of a nearby store filmed the entire incident.

The prosecution has charged John Rosser and Mario Miller with second degree assault. Both are homeless and have long criminal records. Rosser is said to have attacked the suspect with a machete and a 2×4. Before Miller threw a stone on the car’s windshield, he allegedly attacked the male victim with a five-foot-long wooden pole. The suspects have a total of 17 criminal convictions and at least seven misdemeanors.

Thomas-Kennedy has vowed not to prosecute the exact offenses the two suspects previously faced, including assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

“The prosecutor’s ethical duty is to seek justice, but it is not fair to prosecute people for survival and poverty crimes, or to make the lives of people in desperate situations worse for most crimes,” said Thomas-Kennedy.

While the abolitionist routinely cites the “crimes of survival” topic of conversation, she completely ignores the victims. We should stop pretending to be stealing or rummaging through alcohol. Target is about survival. Instead, we should focus on the economic hardship these crimes cause – especially since the criminals they let loose will fall victim to others. Thomas-Kennedy claims that current city attorney Pete Holmes is prosecuting too many low-level crimes and that this has had a disproportionate impact on communities of color. But Holmes rarely pursues low-level crimes. That’s partly why the city has such a high number of productive offenders.

More of opinion

Instead of actually being punished for their crimes, criminals are slapped in the face just to commit further crimes. Combine this with the state’s decriminalization of drugs (a step taken after the Washington Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional on possession of offenses) and the lack of policing, it’s no wonder criminals are feel encouraged to break the law with impunity.

The city was recently shocked by brutal beatings in the Mouth Baker neighborhood on July 31st.

A 22 year old freelance photographer visited Seattle after a tough month. He was recently held up in his hometown of Los Angeles. He said his car was totaled and he had undergone intense physical therapy. He decided to visit Seattle to meet friends and take a “mental break” from his stress.

When he went to his friends in South Seattle, a stranger approached him, grabbed his neck, and threw him to the ground. Then the suspect landed several violent kicks in the head and face. While the victim lay unconscious, the suspect stole the victim’s phone, credit cards, and cash. The suspect is still at large.

With crime already soaring, can Seattle resist a city attorney who plans to dismantle the entire office? After all, she wants “abolition, not reform”.

The overall outcome of Thomas Kennedy’s little to no charge is likely to be anarchy or vigilante justice. And there are already rumors from more Seattle officials saying they’d rather quit than work in a city that gives this type of activist so much power. It won’t end well for Seattle.

Will voters lean towards the elimination of those unwilling to vote for their moderate Republican challenger?

At some point it is worth asking whether the voters of Seattle are either being held hostage by an active extremist base or whether the city itself is overwhelmingly extremist.
