Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, recently toured the family’s emergency shelter being built on the company’s Seattle site.

Bezos visited Mary’s Place Family Center on Monday with Washington Governor Jay Inslee, according to a press release released on Monday. Their visit came shortly after the facility, which opened its doors to vulnerable families in March 2020, celebrated its one year anniversary.

“Built in an Amazon office building at our Seattle headquarters, Washington State’s largest family home has sheltered 700 people, served guests over 130,000 meals and welcomed 26 babies born to dormitory mothers,” said Bezos in a statement. “Thank you to the teams at Mary’s Place and Amazon for their heart and soul in making The Regrade Shelter an important resource for our community.”

Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez toured the Mary’s Place Family Center. The couple interacted with children staying at the shelter.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, Mary’s Place Family Center has applied health and safety protocols, including wearing face masks in common areas, daily temperature and health checkups, improved cleaning and capacity limits. Social distancing between families is observed and meals are served in shifts.

“Mary’s Place provides security, stability and hope to families affected by homelessness. This is an important part of our response to our homelessness crisis, and I am grateful that Amazon supports this special place,” Inslee said in the Amazon press release. “Visiting Mary’s Place Family Center with Jeff Bezos on the Amazon campus in Seattle was inspiring and encouraging.”
