  • Grills are only intended for outdoor use. Never grill indoors – dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) can build up and be fatal. If you suspect CO poisoning, call 9-1-1.
  • Place your grill on a level surface in an open area at least three feet from buildings, flammable surfaces, dry leaves, and brushes.
  • Make sure that the grease trap is empty and clean and that the grill parts are securely in place.
  • For propane barbecues, make sure the hose connection is secure and check the hoses for leaks. This is especially important if you are using the grill for the first time in a long time.

During use:

  • Never leave the grills unattended while you are cooking.
  • Maintain a 3-foot zone around the grill that doesn’t allow children and pets.
  • Keep starter fluid, lighters, or matches out of the reach of children.
  • Use the right tools. Long-handled barbecue utensils and flame-retardant gloves prevent burns from heat and flames.
  • For charcoal grills, avoid adding lighter fluid after the coals are lit.

To clean up:

  • For propane grills, turn off the grill and fuel bottle immediately after grilling.
  • For charcoal grills, Let the coals cool for 48 hours before discarding them. If you can’t wait, pour coals with plenty of water and stir to make sure the fire is out. Never put coals in plastic, paper, or wooden containers. Place in a metal container with a tightly fitting lid.
