Recall effort proceeds against socialist Seattle councilwoman who participated in riots

A Recall of a Seattle city councilor accused of misconduct has enough signatures to move an election forward.

King County’s electoral authority said Wednesday that the recall confirmed more than 11,000 signatures, more than the minimum of 10,687 required to hold an election that could oust Kshama Sawant from office on Seattle City Council represents the 3rd district of the city.

Sawant is being recalled for alleged wrongdoing during the Seattle riots in 2020. The Washington Supreme Court ruled in April that the recall could continue on the grounds that Sawant “failed to disclose” when she led hundreds of protesters in Seattle City Hall and to Mayor Jenny Durkan’s home, but the court denied the charges that they threatened to assault the mayor.

The electoral authority has provisionally set the recall to December 7th, but it will not confirm the date until it has certified the signatures.

Sawant’s campaign castigated their far-right opposition in the pockets of big business. Her campaign said the opposition had waited to submit the signatures so that the recall could not take place on the same day as other city elections, what the campaign calls voter suppression tactics.

“Last weekend progressive Democrats showed up to unite against the right-wing recall!” Sawant’s campaign read it on Twitter. “Over 500 Republican donors and over 160 Trump donors have agreed to fund the recall campaign and its voter suppression tactics.”

Sawant, who has been in office since 2013, is the only elected member of the Socialist Alternative.

Sawant did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
