RENO, Nevada (AP) – Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of retired Catholic Bishop Randolph R. Calvo of Reno, replacing Seattle Auxiliary Bishop Daniel H. Mueggenborg.
Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio in the USA, announced the appointment of Muggenborg by the Pope in Washington DC on Tuesday.
Mueggenborg, 59, has been Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle since 2017. Born in Oklahoma, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Tulsa. As a boy he was an acolyte, and later he was pastor of three parishes in Tulsa.
Calvo, who will be 70 next month, has headed the Northern Nevada Diocese since 2006.
Muggenborg received a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Oklahoma State University in 1984, studied pretheology at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana, and earned a degree in theology and biblical theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
In Oklahoma, he served on the boards of Ascension Healthcare and the Tulsa Catholic Charities.
Calvo said in a statement that he was retiring for health reasons. He said Reno was lucky that Muggenborg “was sent to us”.
“He brings many personal gifts and diverse pastoral experiences to his ministry,” he said.
