His TikToks have garnered over 200 million likes from people all over the world! # k5evening
SEATTLE – When Chef Matt Broussard prepares a meal, he’s not just cooking for himself. He cooks for millions.
“I try not to be too fancy or too trashy,” said Matt.
Before Matt became an internet sensation for his cooking videos, he was working in Texas with a dream of coming to Seattle to cook for Chef Tom Douglas.
“I wanted to work for him so badly that a Texas senator sent him a letter recommending me.”
It must have been the right ingredient. Matt joined Tom’s staff in 2014 and ended up cooking in all of his many restaurants.
“I continued to work for Tom as a rover, which is like a tournament, which is the specific term where in all restaurants you have pretty much every position you need to fill the kitchen.”
But while he was filling positions in Tom’s kitchens, he also stood in front of a camera.
“It was really weird at first. Just blackout and I don’t know what to say.”
Over the years and many videos later, Matt not only figured out what to say, but also found a new path. When Douglas had to close its restaurants because of the pandemic, Matt started making videos all day.
“I started making TikTok videos in 2020 and they were fine, just normal recipe videos. And I found that only the most random things would show up there. Just the random things,” Matt said. “One day I’ll just cut an onion. That’s it, right, chopped up, and that hit a million views.”
His TikTok account @acooknamedmatt currently has 4.4 million followers and almost half a million follow him on Instagram and YouTube.
“If you’re not used to seeing this and updating your feed and seeing the ticker go by the thousands to hundreds of thousands to millions, this is just crazy to see.”
And he shoots all the videos from home.
“I have the camera here, a couple of lights,” said Matt. “I’ve been photographing these things alone for years and that’s why I only use one camera to make my life easier. They are really quick cuts, so I really don’t have to say much. Mainly like preparation, knife work, noise.”
After he’s done, Matt will edit his footage to share on all of his social media channels.
“I’m going upstairs and editing the video and I need to figure out what the video is going to be spread over so I can edit it for multiple things.”
He may have started cooking for others, but Chef Matt Broussard has found the recipe for success.
“Just make a fun cooking video. And teach people something.”
Matt also has a range of salts through Spokane’s, Spiceology. More information here.
