Jay Schreckengost was missing while on a hunting trip in east Washington. It was last heard on November 2, 2021.
KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash – Several agencies are involved in the search for an assistant chief of the Seattle Fire Department who was reported missing during a hunting trip in east Washington.
According to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), Jay Schreckengost was at Squaw Rock Resort on State Route 410 while on a hunting trip. He was last heard on Tuesday, November 2, when he texted his wife to let her know that he parked his truck and was hunting.
It is believed that Schreckengost went hunting alone, but his son was due to arrive at the camp on Wednesday.
Schreckengost’s family went to find him on Wednesday and contacted the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) when they could not find him. The YCSO then contacted the KCSO.

Dread Gost’s truck was in the Cliffdell area of Kittitas County, north of SR 410. Search and rescue teams are searching for Dread Gost in southwest Kittitas County near Cliffdell, where his truck was found. The KCSO said the area is quite remote and borders Yakima County.
The YCSO said Schreckengost was a survivor and was wearing the correct clothing, along with food, water, a rifle, backpack, and maps. Its last known location is considered a typical hunting area at this time of the year.
Around 50 people searched for horror on Thursday, including a group of Seattle firefighters, friends and family.
Search and rescue ground teams from Kittitas and Yakima counties are involved in the search, and Klickitat County’s search and rescue services brought two hunting dogs to search along the trails in the area. A drone with a thermal imaging camera is also used to locate Schreckengost.
“We are deeply saddened by this news and hold Jay and his family in our hearts. We hope for positive news that it will be found safely, ”Seattle Fire said in a statement to KING 5.
