Seattle overtook San Francisco, which led the country in vaccinations.
SEATTLE – Seattle is the first major American city to have at least 70% of its residents aged 12 and over fully vaccinated, Mayor Jenny Durkan announced on Wednesday.
Seattle overtook San Francisco, which led the country in vaccinations.
Currently, 78% of Seattle’s population aged 12 and over has at least started the vaccination process.
“When we started our vaccination campaign earlier this year, I said I wanted Seattle to be the first major American city to fully vaccinate 70% of its residents. Today I am incredibly proud that we achieved this goal, ”said Durkan.
“Now that we have achieved community protection, we can guide the nation in reopening safely and making serious recovery,” she added.
To date, the city has had more than 249,000 vaccinations – or more than 131,000 people.
Durkan thanked health care providers, business and community partners, staff and volunteers for their contribution to the effort.
“It’s an amazing achievement, and when you look back where we have been, you know we were the first town in town. We had the first deaths, we didn’t have a guide, we didn’t have access to testing, the best national testing programs, and building on that with a vaccination program, “said Durkan.” Every step of the way, the people of Seattle hit the moment.
