NEW ORLEANS – (AP) – A major steel maker announces a $ 120 million expansion to its factory in the Convent community of Louisiana.
The Times-Picayune’The New Orleans Advocate reports that Nucor Corp. informed state environmental agencies of the decision when they asked for a revised air emissions permit in July.
The company said the decision to put the plans on hold was made before it presented a plan to reduce emissions to regulators and before environmental groups opposed the proposed billing of fees related to the release of corrosive sulfuric acid mist and highly flammable Have objected to hydrogen sulfide since it started operations in 2013.
“This was purely a business decision based solely on market conditions,” said company spokeswoman Katherine Miller on Thursday.
Environmental groups Inclusive Louisiana and the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, represented by the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic, have challenged the illegal emissions regime the company proposed to the Department of Environmental Quality as being too small. Both groups also praised Nucor’s decision not to continue the expansion.
“The withdrawal of the proposed Pelletizer project is both a positive step for local residents and an opportunity for both DEQ and the community to review Nucor’s ongoing permit violations,” said Lauren Godshall, attorney at Tulane Law Clinic.
