State regulators have expanded protection for power and natural gas disruptions to people who cannot pay due to financial difficulties during the pandemic.
The Utilities and Transportation Commission ordered that investor-owned electricity and natural gas utilities in Washington continue a moratorium on non-payment interruptions through September 30, 2021. In addition, utilities will waive new customer deposits and all default fees until March 29, 2022.
This comes after Governor Jay Inslee issued an extension of the statewide installment payer support proclamation.
In April 2020, Inslee issued a proclamation prohibiting energy, water and telecommunications companies from separating customers for non-payment. It has been extended several times.
Customers who are struggling should contact their utility companies to inquire about their options.
Officials said UTC staff are available to customers who need help working with their utilities and can be reached at 888-333-WUTC (9882) or via chat during regular business hours at www.utc.wa.gov.
