Headlines of the pandemic at the end of the first week of May:
COUNTY HEALTH OFFICER BRIEFING: DR. Jeff Duchin said that after six weeks of increasing cases in King County there was a “slight decline” last week. While the local pandemic “is no longer a 5-alarm fire”, “it continues to burn,” he warned, and the more people vaccinated, the better the likelihood that it can be brought to a “smoldering” status. Check out his briefing here, including media questions and answers.
KING COUNTY NUMBERS: Continue to the daily statistics from the Healthcare Daily summary page, cumulative totals:
* 100,485 people tested positive, 347 more than yesterday in total *
* 1,536 people have died, 3 more than yesterday in total
* 5,926 people were hospitalized, 2 more than yesterday
* 1,053,287 people tested, 2,257 more than yesterday
NOTE: It appears that yesterday’s amazingly high number of cases from King County was a typo on the part of the county – skipping that day and adding the “more than” sums of today and yesterday to Wednesday’s total is only slightly less than tonight’s total .
Continuing today’s report – our weekly review of the key numbers on the COVID vaccination among King County residents Dashboard:
* 1,248,950 people received a dose (67.5% of all 16+)
* 853,646 people received both doses (46.1% of all 16+)
* King County allocated 1,888,395 doses (excluding pharmacy programs).
A week ago, the first four sums were 98,095 / 1,525 / 5,827 / 1,038,291 and the vaccination sums were 1,190,224 / 783,936 / 1,691,845.
STATE NUMBERS: See them here.
WORLDWIDE FIGURES: 156.9 million cases, more than 3,270,000 deaths – see nation-to-nation numbers here.
CITY MILESTONE: 100,000 doses were dispensed at the turnstiles associated with the city, so the mayor delivered ice cream to the city-run turnstiles, including Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex::

GET VACCINE THIS WEEKEND: You’re still welcome to go to the city’s hubs without an appointment, including this one here in WS (2801 SW Thistle). But you are also welcome to secure a job by taking a first or second dose – you can do that here. WS is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Lumen Field is also open on Saturdays from 11:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Both offer all three vaccines. (And if you want to look elsewhere, this is it covidwa.com Look up.)
TO EAT: Here’s another reminder of that Saturday afternoon food box distribution.
