Restaurant weeks are designed to provide a discounted opportunity to sample the menu at upscale restaurants to attract new or future audiences.
However, in cities like Seattle, where most fine dining restaurants had this built into their business model with the city’s excellent happy hour selection, the restrictions on the official restaurant weeks – Monday through Thursday at fixed prices – only diluted it to the point that few people, either guests or owners, found it to be the incredible proposition it should be. But the concept essentially showed a template for what was possible.
The tenth annual Plate of Nations, the signature event of the MLK Business Association of South Seattle, will celebrate the incredible variety of restaurants in the area from September 10th to 26th this year. In lieu of Restaurant Week’s three-course meals, each restaurant offers their customers a shareable plate or trial platter for either $ 20 or $ 35, so they can get a good idea of the restaurant’s entire menu in a single order.
This year’s participating restaurants include Qeeroo and Amy’s Merkato, each serving food from a different Ethiopian culture; some of the best soul foods in town from the Comfort Zone; Mexican food from El Quetzal; two teriyaki shops; the famous Vietnamese Rainier Restaurant and first class fried fish from Emerald City.
The event in one of the restaurants with the most restaurants in town also features a passport program where you can print or collect a form and receive stickers or initials at any restaurant on the program. Those with the most postage stamps at the end of the event will be able to win gift certificates and Plate of Nations merchandise.
