Designpraxis LMN Architects have revealed new details of the design for the Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion. The $ 113 million project will include the 50,000-square-foot pavilion adjacent to the existing Seattle Aquarium. The pavilion connects the new Seattle Waterfront, downtown and the historic Pike Place Market.

As LMN explains, the new Ocean Pavilion will integrate a complex construction program into the urban context of Seattle. Guided by the Seattle Aquarium’s mission to promote the preservation of the marine environment, the new facility focuses on global stories such as climate change and ocean acidification. Exhibits rooted in the Coral Triangle ecosystem and the Indo-Pacific region highlight the interconnectedness of the ocean with local waters and inspire visitors to connect the wellbeing of Puget Sound with the greater Pacific.

The pavilion is primarily dedicated to sharks and stingrays and will contain a 325,000 gallon hot water tank for a number of species. Adjacent to the large tank is a flexible room in which events for up to 200 people can take place. The program also includes collecting spaces for smaller groups to take part in hands-on educational activities and guided interpretations. Bob Davidson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Seattle Aquarium, said, “The Ocean Pavilion will be located at the city’s crossroads. It’s a gift and a statement of the importance of Seattle’s relationship with the water and the ocean. “
The design also includes an oculus – the “Sharkulus” – which offers a view of the main exhibition from both the plaza level and the roof terrace. The exhibits in the pavilion consist of four primary experience zones. Circulation paths through the levels of the pavilion offer a view both above and below the water of the exhibits as well as the Aquarium Plaza and the waterfront.
The Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion is slated for completion in 2023.
