The Washington State Department of Transportation expects this conservation work to continue through the fall of 2022.
On Monday, the contractor crews working for WSDOT will start a two-phase project to rehabilitate the highway through downtown Seattle. This is similar to working north on I-5 in 2019 for drivers who may remember, but it is the first major work on this stretch in more than 55 years.

“Interstate 5 is critical to our local economy,” said James Harper, project engineer at WSDOT. “The freeway has held up well since it opened in the mid-1960s, but some recent repairs to expansion joints are a sure sign that this work is now needed. Restoring and repairing expansion joints will keep it in good condition. “
Drivers should plan ahead and expect lanes and ramps to close during the week between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. on I-5 southbound by mid-July. Weekend lane reductions could begin in June, but the closing dates have not yet been announced. WSDOT promises closings will not occur on holiday weekends or weekends when major events are taking place in the Stadium District or downtown Seattle.
The first phase of the $ 25.7 million project will remove a thin layer of worn concrete and then repair it. Once this is complete, the crews will replace the 40 expansion joints between I-90 and Spokane Street and one more on I-90 across I-5, which is expected to begin in mid-July.
