According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, there are 13 states that levy taxes on food. Of these, only Alabama, Mississippi, and South Dakota tax groceries at the full sales tax rate. Kansas, like Hawaii, Idaho, and Oklahoma, tax groceries at the regular rate but also offer loans or discounts to offset the tax for part or all of the population.
The current Kansas sales tax rate on groceries is 6.5%. In a statement, Governor Kelly said her proposed bill would save a family of four in Kansas an average of $ 500 or more on their purchases a year.
WIBW reported that the governor estimated the legislation would mean about $ 450 million a year in lost revenue.
If passed quickly, the law could come into force as early as summer 2022.
