The renovation and expansion of the Asian Art Museum is funded by a mixture of public and private funds. The project budget, which will be further refined as the designs are completed, is approximately $ 49 million.

“The architectural design approach corresponds to the curatorial goals, which are intended to create relevance and meaning between past and present. At the same time, the design focuses on strengthening the relationship between building and park – from the outside in and from the inside out.” Sam Miller, AIA, partner at LMN Architects.

The planned changes to the Art Deco building designed by Bebb and Gould will allow the museum to showcase more of its permanent collection and present major temporary exhibitions with ever wider perspectives Asia Traditions and contemporary themes. The project offers more space for deeper exploration of the diverse artistic and cultural traditions of Asia At the same time, it improves visitor enjoyment and access to public programs and community events.

In addition to major system improvements (HVAC, fire safety and seismic improvements), the project includes two small building extensions and a proposed new terrace overlooking the eastern lawn. A glass park lobby on the east facade is intended to improve circulation in the galleries and create direct visual connections to the park. This three-story extension will provide space for a new gallery, an education room and relocated administration offices. Among other improvements, the work must preserve the historical character of the building and restore elements that have been marred by years of gradual renovation.

After the exhibition Tabaimo: Utsutsushi Utsushi (November 11th, 2016 – February 26, 2017), with an expected reopening in 2019.
