In a basement room off a side street on the quiet side of Capitol Hill, one of the most traditional and extraordinary places will once again serve customers from Seattle.

After the facility was restricted by pandemic restrictions last year and then taken on a summer break, the Polish home will reopen its doors for Friday dinner on September 24th.

For years, the community center has opened its doors on Friday evenings and some Sunday mornings and welcomes “temporary members” for a small fee and invites the public to cucumber soup, pierogi and bison grass vodka. In the same basement where Jimi Hendrix once played a show, Polish teenagers brought plates of pork knuckle to tables teeming with hungry families and friends.

The simple, hearty meals brought a touch of home to the local Polish community and introduced the cuisine to a wider audience – each night groups of Capitol Hill hipsters shared the space with generations of people chatting in Polish.

While the entire menu with specialties like cabbage rolls, potatoes, sausages and seemingly endless dumpling variations won’t be quite back this Friday, a post on Dom Polski’s website announced that the kitchen would open this weekend and offer a variety of Pierogi ready for the guests.

The dumplings and cash on offer will run from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday evening in the basement of the Polish House at 1714 18th Avenue, right next to Madison. Don’t forget about cash to pay for the temporary membership.
