A historic houseboat in Seattle’s Madison Park neighborhood is coming to life thanks to a 3-year renovation project by local company Best Practice.
The company’s efforts added an 800-square-foot black metal facade to the houseboat’s original footprint of 1,200 square feet, which will help a local couple find a more comfortable fit for their growing young family.

According to the architect, “This residence started life as a floating home on Lake Union! It was transported near the shores of Lake Washington and firmly pegged to the ground, but we still like to think of it as a boathouse. With a charming street presence, the design team created an open interior with vaulted ceilings, new living rooms in the basement and a primary suite on the upper floor of the new extension. “

Best Practice turned the existing bedroom into a quirky room for the couple’s daughter. An open floor plan replaces the clutter of the previous layout and features a vaulted ceiling made of stained cedar wood that provides a study and laundry room. The new upper floor consists mainly of the master bedroom suite.

The company worked hard to make sure its renovation honored the house’s waterline. The Seattle Times has more on houseboat communities in the city here.
