Seattle’s mayoral candidates face each other in the debate
On Thursday, Seattle mayoral candidates Bruce Harrell and Lorena González stood in a debate that focused on some of the city’s biggest problems.
SEATTLE – On Thursday, Seattle mayoral candidates Bruce Harrell and Lorena González stood in a debate that focused on some of the city’s biggest problems.
Both candidates are very familiar with what moves the city. Harrell is a former city council member and González is a current city council member.
While the focus should be on business and economics, many other topics were discussed in the hour-long debate, including public transport, affordable housing and corporate taxation.
Both candidates said their top priority as mayor will be addressing the homeless crisis.
“I want our parks back and I want our sidewalks back and I want to house people. This is my sense of urgency. And quite frankly, the whole town knows we can’t see this from City Hall, ”Harrell said.
“People who live in our open spaces, in tents, is unacceptable. I don’t believe that people should live outside. We must work clearly and urgently to create more accommodation quickly,” said González.
The candidates agreed on a few topics, such as the requirement for vaccination mandates for city workers such as first responders. However, the two mayoral candidates were on opposite ends of the debate on issues such as the future of public safety in the city.
“We need a mayor who cannot find excuses for a police department that has significant operational and management problems, a police department that has profound cultural and reform problems,” said González.
“If you say openly that your goal is to relieve the police department by fifty percent, there will be an aftershock. One of those will be small businesses that need protection and need help, “Harrell said.
The candidates will meet for a second debate on October 28th. Election day is November 2nd
