THOUSAND OAKS, Calif .– (AP) – Von Miller spent Monday in a sentimental daze after the Denver Broncos traded him. He went to the basement of his home in Colorado, which was filled with memorabilia, and tearfully pondered his departure from the only NFL team he had ever known.
When Miller boarded a plane for the west coast on Tuesday, the passing star’s eyes were dry – and his vision of the future became clearer and clearer.
“I went to sleep 4-4 and woke up 7-1,” Miller said with a grin.
Miller participated in his first workout with the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday, with the blue numbers on his bone-colored # 40 jersey peeling off because of their hasty adhesion.
Miller already knows Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey from Pro Bowls and off-season meetings. He feels his general wellbeing increase by the hour as he seizes the opportunity given him when the Broncos surrendered the face of their franchise for two high draft picks.
The Rams were already a Super Bowl contender, and this former Super Bowl MVP is eager to take the trip with them.
“I’ve always been in blue and orange, (so) everything looks weird, but it feels extremely right,” Miller said. “It feels right to be here. Feels like this is right for me. (#) 40 looks weird, but it feels right. Being here with all of these guys is really one Dream man. (Denver) definitely made me right by sending me on such a legendary franchise with a legendary team. “
Miller and Donald are two of the greatest pass-rushers of their generation, and they’ll be teaming up for at least the remainder of this season in a partnership that has the potential to reconfigure the NFC race. While the Rams have scaled back statistical steps after pitching the best defense in the league last season, sending Miller to quarterbacks alongside Donald and Leonard Floyd adds new ones to a unit that already leads the NFL with 25 sacks Dimensions.
“I feel like it will set us all free,” Miller said. “They’ll try to find creative ways to create a triple team and a double team, but it can’t possibly be that effective. We have great coaches. We have great guys playing on this team and we’ll be able to find out. … You hear stories about the Fearsome Foursome, you hear stories about that legendary defense, and we want to recreate that. They played great defensive all year round. I just want to add some of the things that I do best. “
Miller will likely take it easy this week in training after missing the Broncos game last weekend with an ankle injury. Despite “having some ongoing problems”, he plans to play AFC-leading Tennessee (6-2) at SoFi on Sunday night.
Miller has still not seen the Rams ‘palatial new home after traveling unharmed to the Broncos’ game against the Chargers last season.
“I’ve heard stories about how amazing it is and how the Super Bowl is going to be held this year,” Miller said. “Hopefully we’ll play there.”
The rest of the Rams already thought the Super Bowl was an achievable goal for their current core, but Miller’s arrival underscored the urgency of this season. Miller will be an unrestricted free agent next spring, although the Rams have already spoken to his representative about the possibility of an extended stay in LA.
Matthew Stafford, the other big star who left his longtime NFL home for the Rams this year through a blockbuster deal, welcomed Miller to sunny Southern California.
“I’ve been a Von Miller fan for a long time,” said Stafford. “He’s a big player in this league and when you add him to a defense that already has a number of playmakers, that has the potential to be very special. … We will do everything we can to take him away as soon as possible and I know that once he is out there it will be of great value to us. “
NOTES: Stafford was one of several Rams who did not participate in a short, light workout on Wednesday. The quarterback has a stiff back, but he says he’ll be playing on Sunday. … WR Robert Woods was out with a foot injury and WR Cooper Kupp was paused. Coach Sean McVay expects both of them to play. … LT Andrew Whitworth has also rested and his availability is not certain after missing last week’s game.
